StKittsTheatre.com celebrates one year of sharing culture!!

On this past Saturday (August the 8th) StKittsTheatre.com celebrated it's first birthday! What a wonderful ride it has been over the last 12 months as the site has evolved from a play-listing website into a comprehensive, all-inclusive mecca for all things theatre in the Niagara Region. I can still remember when the first company responded to my outreach and said they were willing to be involved with the site and now 22 theatre companies are connected to StKittsTheatre.com. Twenty-Two!! When I started this project, I didn't even know twenty-two theatre companies existed in the Niagara Region. I have to say it has been a blessing working with the artists in the area to keep this site as up-to-date and relevant as possible. Obviously a massive thank you goes out to the Niagara Peninsula Aboriginal Area Management Board, who with their generous monetary contribution, allowed me to continue developing the website. I would also like to thank the St.Catharines and Area Arts Council for their ongoing support. StKittsTheatre.com has, at times, been a very demanding and strenuous project but I have enjoyed every second of it. Here's to another year of helping people get connected with the blooming arts scene here in the Niagara Region.

StKittsTheatre.com is proud to announce the winner of the August 2009 Artist of the Month award. Congratulations go out to this month's winner Dr.David Fancy; a Professor in and Chair of the Dramatic Arts Department at Brock University. Check out the Artist Chat Q & A session I had with David by clicking here. You'll also find a brief bio, a couple pics and how to get connected with the Brock Drama Department on the Artist of the Month page. Congratulations David!

We are also very excited to announce the 22nd theatre group to sign on with StKittsTheatre.com. Gypsy Theatre has recently joined the website. You can find their listing on the company listings page (or click here). Information on all of their upcoming shows will be posted in the coming days. Welcome Gypsy Theatre!

Forgive me for the delay, I was enjoying some R & R with the family in the gorgeous weather we've been having in St.Catharines the past couple days.

StKittsTheatre.com is proud to announce the winner of the June 2009 Artist of the Month award. Having received an overwhelming number of nominations from the community this past few weeks, our very own web-comic artist Calder Archinuk has taken home the award! Make sure you stop by the link on the homepage to see his short bio, the Q & A: artist chat he and I had and a few other treats. If you've never been the page before, you can click
here.

Just a heads up as to why there havent been as much breaking news lately... many of the theatre companies associated with StKittsTheatre.com are in their off-season. They're in their regenerating, planning and regrouping phase as summer rolls in. All of the details on their upcoming seasons, auditions, workshops and more will go up when they publicly make those announcements. That said, there are still some wonderful opportunities to see theatre this summer; make sure to check out the upcoming shows page for what's happening this summer.

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Our weekly comic strip Every Tuesday turns 30 today! Make sure you check out the comics page to see issue #30 featuring a special guest star!

Three new reviews were added to the show reviews page. James Wegg has reviewed three Shaw Festival plays: Sunday in the Park with George, Born Yesterday and A Moon for the Misbegotten. Check out the reviews page for the scoop.

Also, check out the Upcoming Shows page to see one of the new features I am experimenting with. Alongside the information to the show you can find a video clip. For the Shaw Festival there is a funny YouTube clip that I pulled directly from the Shaw Website. For the Mystery on the Lake production, I uploaded a video trailer for the show that they kindly sent my way. These represent a new form of advertising for theatre that I would like to press and develop with some of the local theatre companies. Video trailers are an effective way of displaying some of the show's visual scoring; we see this with movie trailers all the time. So I hope this will encourage more Niagara Region companies to start making trailers and making them available exclusively on StKittsTheatre.com. Stay tuned!

Comments? Suggestions? Check out the Contact Us page and submit your thoughts.

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

As promised, some of the upgrades and changes are already underway. I've done some hardware upgrades to the site so it should move much faster and handle higher amounts of traffic. Also, I have uploaded the brand new logo and layout for the site. Speaking to the new layout, I believe listing all of the site's features along the left column of the page will make navigating the site much easier. Enjoy the new changes!

June is coming fast and we're still accepting nominations for the
June 2009 Artist of the Month. Know someone who has made some special contribution to the theatre community in the Niagara Region of who is in a show coming up??? Get your nominations in as soon as possible!

Make sure to check out the StKittsTheatre.com
facebook page. There have been some recent postings on the public board about auditions and calls for volunteers. Don't miss out!

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

As per schedule, this week's issue of Every Tuesday has gone live on the comics page. This week features actor Edwin Booth! You will have to stay tuned until next week to find out who the next star appearance will be.

As the creator and website administrator of StKittsTheatre.com, I just wanted to take a moment to publicly thank a very generous contribution that has been made to the site. The Niagara Peninsula Aboriginal Area Management Board (NPAAMB), of whom who has supported me with funding for the internship that I served with Lyndesfarne earlier this year, has supported me once again.

The NPAAMB donates $1,000 to StKittsTheatre.com!

The donation is part of a reshaping process for StKittsTheatre.com and I am very excited about the coming months. Since August 2008 I have personally invested close to 1,000 hours into this site in order to bring people closer to the theatre community and ensure that theatre was more easily accessible. The financial contribution is going towards several software and hardware upgrades so that I can create and develop even more wonderful features for the site. These features will include (but believe me when I say not limited to): more theatre reviews, restaurant reviews, accomodations, more artist interviews, video tours of local theatres, podcasts, news feed done on video and much much more. In order to bring all of these things however, the site will have to depart from the days of being completely advertisement-free in order to off-set the amount of time I am pouring into the site. That said, I firmly believe in supporting the local scene - you will NOT see GOOGLE or MYSPACE advertisements. Soon, what I hope for you to find here, are advertisements for local establishments, restaurants, pubs and businesses as I strive to keep StKittsTheatre.com 100% Niagara Region based. So again, a very heart-felt and big thank you to the NPAAMB... and here's to the exciting times that are coming this summer! Stay tuned for the release of the new features and the updated site.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS. Now more than ever StKittsTheatre.com is looking for volunteers to help develop new content. If you are interested in filming interviews, being a interviewer, reviewing shows / restaurants, drawing comics, writing book reviews or short stories.... please get in touch with us soon!  Email me (Bryan) at:
bryananthonywhite@gmail.com if you are interested.

StKittsTheatre.com has had a bit of a face-lift. We're experimenting with a new layout right now and so far so good. Please be patient through the transition; things like minor bugs or inconsistencies with fonts or the 'look and feel' of the site. This upgrade is coming in response to the continued support by several members of the community - without their feedback and help this site would not be possible.

We are very pleased to announce that the James Wegg Review page is finally complete! A collaboration has been site up between the James Weeg Review website and StKittsTheatre.com. This week's edition of Every Tuesday has gone up; check out the comics page to see it!

Carousel Players has put out a news release about their upcoming production:

New Play Promotes Greater Understanding of Children With ADHD And ‘Being Different’

Carousel Players and Toronto’s Roseneath Theatre have combined resources to create a new play called The Incredible Speediness of Jamie Cavanaugh for young audiences that promotes greater empathy and understanding of children with ADHD and “being different”.  “The central character in the play is a positive role model for young people with ADHD,” says Pablo Felices Luna, Artistic Director of Carousel Players. “The writer’s sense of humour permeates the play and the 12-year old girl’s journey to understanding and acceptance is very touching. The play also looks at bullying and other important school issues in a very entertaining way.” A public performance of The Incredible Speediness of Jamie Cavanaugh at the Sullivan Mahoney Courthouse Theatre will be presented on Saturday, April 4th at 3pm. Tickets are $10 each and available through Carousel Players at 905-682-8326 X26. More information and free study guides are available at www.carouselplayers.com

Theatre is a powerful tool for inspiring dialogue between young people around the challenges of “being different”. Writer Chris Craddock, author of the play says, “we hope this play will put a human face and a touching story to a condition that too many people know simply as a label or a stereotype that makes children ‘different’. Where is the balance between helping those who need it and finding effective strategies for people who come in contact with children with ADHD at school, at home and in the community?”

Written for students in Grades 4 to 8, the play will tour Ontario schools from March to May 2009 with five weeks of performances in Niagara area schools booked by Carousel Players. The play has been endorsed by CADDAC (Centre for ADD/ADHD Advocacy Canada) and ETFO (Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario) and will be featured as part of teacher’s professional development workshops at ETFO’s Healthy Minds & Healthy Hearts this April in Hamilton. Thanks to support from Canadian Tire for this new play and support from Carousel Players’ donors, corporations and three levels of government, the cost of touring this presentation to Niagara schools is subsidized.

The Incredible Speediness of Jamie Cavanaugh
is the story of Jamie and Max who are best friends. She’s a trouble magnet who thinks her ADHD is some kind of amazing ‘super speed’ superpower and he’s the smartest kid in his grade. But when Jamie tries to help Max against a bully named Rock, her ‘super power’ ends up creating more trouble for both of them. Jamie learns that to be a good friend, she needs to slow down and listen, and in so doing, she discovers that “turning over a new leaf” and helping others is more valuable than she had ever thought. Although Jamie, Max and Rock all encounter different problems at home and school, they share similar experiences that bond them through the roots of friendship and acceptance.

Carousel Players is a Niagara-based professional theatre company with a 36 year history of creating theatre that challenges young minds and promotes creativity and learning through follow-up study guides that link to the curriculum. Produced together by Carousel Players and Roseneath Theatre, The Incredible Speediness of Jamie Cavanaugh is directed by Richard Greenblatt and features actors: Madeleine Donohue, Emma Hunter, Andrew Moodie and Aaron Willis and stage management by Giselle Clarke-Trenaman. Set & costumes are designed by Kelly Wolf and sound design by Rick Sacks.

StKittsTheatre.com is excited to announce the launch of a brand new feature to the site! You will now be able to find a link along the navigation bar at the top of this page that will take to you the Reader's Corner page. Visitors to the site will now be able to find book reviews, recommended theatre readings and resources to book-related websites. The first book review has been submitted by Tina Yeung-Moore of Work in Progress Theatre. She reviews the book Year of the King by Antony Sher. The first recommended reading submission was made by myself. I talk about two books: Reading the Material Theatre by Ric Knowles and Performance Analysis editted by Laurie Wolf and Colin Counsell. Anyone is allowed to make a submission, so if you are interested in contributing, check out how by going to the Reader's Corner page.

The weekly edition of Every Tuesday has gone live! This week's episode: Jerry Springer.

Two new features will go live by next week. One will be called: Reader's Corner, a page featuring book reviews from local artists and members of the community. The first book review was on a book called Year of the King by Antony Sher - the review was written by Work in Progress Theatre's Tina Yeung-Moore. The second feature that will go up is a short story column called Shorts. Short stories will be submitted by members of the community, broken into three parts and released over a three week period. Our first short story has been submitted by Essential Collective Theatre's Jason Cadieux. If you would like to contribute to the Book Review or Short Story features... please do not hesitate to contact me. Stay tuned for more information.

Lyndesfarne Theatre Projects' American Buffalo opens this weekend. Here are a few pictures that were taken on Media day by Assistant Director Andrew Fleming. More pics to come!
