Carousel Players has put out a news release about their upcoming production:
New Play Promotes Greater Understanding of Children With ADHD And ‘Being Different’
Carousel Players and Toronto’s Roseneath Theatre have combined resources to create a new play called The Incredible Speediness of Jamie Cavanaugh for young audiences that promotes greater empathy and understanding of children with ADHD and “being different”. “The central character in the play is a positive role model for young people with ADHD,” says Pablo Felices Luna, Artistic Director of Carousel Players. “The writer’s sense of humour permeates the play and the 12-year old girl’s journey to understanding and acceptance is very touching. The play also looks at bullying and other important school issues in a very entertaining way.” A public performance of The Incredible Speediness of Jamie Cavanaugh at the Sullivan Mahoney Courthouse Theatre will be presented on Saturday, April 4th at 3pm. Tickets are $10 each and available through Carousel Players at 905-682-8326 X26. More information and free study guides are available at www.carouselplayers.com
Theatre is a powerful tool for inspiring dialogue between young people around the challenges of “being different”. Writer Chris Craddock, author of the play says, “we hope this play will put a human face and a touching story to a condition that too many people know simply as a label or a stereotype that makes children ‘different’. Where is the balance between helping those who need it and finding effective strategies for people who come in contact with children with ADHD at school, at home and in the community?”
Written for students in Grades 4 to 8, the play will tour Ontario schools from March to May 2009 with five weeks of performances in Niagara area schools booked by Carousel Players. The play has been endorsed by CADDAC (Centre for ADD/ADHD Advocacy Canada) and ETFO (Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario) and will be featured as part of teacher’s professional development workshops at ETFO’s Healthy Minds & Healthy Hearts this April in Hamilton. Thanks to support from Canadian Tire for this new play and support from Carousel Players’ donors, corporations and three levels of government, the cost of touring this presentation to Niagara schools is subsidized.
The Incredible Speediness of Jamie Cavanaugh is the story of Jamie and Max who are best friends. She’s a trouble magnet who thinks her ADHD is some kind of amazing ‘super speed’ superpower and he’s the smartest kid in his grade. But when Jamie tries to help Max against a bully named Rock, her ‘super power’ ends up creating more trouble for both of them. Jamie learns that to be a good friend, she needs to slow down and listen, and in so doing, she discovers that “turning over a new leaf” and helping others is more valuable than she had ever thought. Although Jamie, Max and Rock all encounter different problems at home and school, they share similar experiences that bond them through the roots of friendship and acceptance.
Carousel Players is a Niagara-based professional theatre company with a 36 year history of creating theatre that challenges young minds and promotes creativity and learning through follow-up study guides that link to the curriculum. Produced together by Carousel Players and Roseneath Theatre, The Incredible Speediness of Jamie Cavanaugh is directed by Richard Greenblatt and features actors: Madeleine Donohue, Emma Hunter, Andrew Moodie and Aaron Willis and stage management by Giselle Clarke-Trenaman. Set & costumes are designed by Kelly Wolf and sound design by Rick Sacks.
